Recap: Year of the Pig Fundraiser for Camosun College

The CPABC Victoria/SVI Chapter hosted their annual Chinese New Year dinner on February 21, 2019 to raise funds for the CPA Award Endowment at Camosun College.

This long-standing and much anticipated event brought together local members, academics, award recipients and other supporters to ring in the lunar new year while supporting a worthy cause.

This year, in celebration of the Year of the Pig, a record 170 guests enjoyed a splendid eight course banquet style dinner which was again held at the well-renowned Don Mee Seafood Restaurant located in Victoria’s historic Chinatown district.

As in past years, a silent auction offered attendees a chance to bid and compete to win many fine items – all generously donated by local companies and members (see list of donors below).  Proceeds from the silent auction go directly to support student scholarships at Camosun College.

The evening’s emcee was the effervescent Cindy Choi FCPA FCGA who is one of the original founders of this legacy chapter gala event.

Cindy was ably supported by several volunteers from the chapter who helped with registration, setting up the silent auction, soliciting donations and cash collection.

Kudos to Shane Sexton who organized the event along with Jennifer Smith, Ellen Slanina, Karen Shew, Matt Logan, and Kelsi Pullen. Shane continues a long family tradition of supporting this annual gala (which his father-in-law Gordon Chan FCPA FCGA co-founded thirty years ago).

Shane said, “Cindy has always done a fantastic job as emcee and has helped the chapter board out tremendously. We are very appreciative of her help.”

Also in attendance were representatives from Camosun College including college president Sherri Bell, who provided opening remarks, senior administrators and faculty.

CPABC was represented by two provincial board members – Chris Burnley FCPA FCA and Martha Thomas CPA CGA – along with provincial staff David Chiang CPA CA and Nicola McLaren CPA CA.

The Chapter is excited to launch the lunar new year and celebrate the Year of the Pig.

For members, CPA candidates/students, its also a wonderful new year to get involved and connected.  Watch for upcoming Chapter PD and Social Networking events in chapter emails and the chapter website.
