Influence and Persuasion in Organizations and Everyday Life
How does persuasion work? Getting things done in any organization means understanding how to use interpersonal skills to manage relationships and persuade others about the legitimacy and value of one’s ideas. Based on established principles from management science, marketing and psychology, we will explore how social influence tools can be exercised constructively.
In this workshop, you will:
• Learn how to use techniques of influence to accomplish your organizational and personal goals.
• Learn tactics of persuasion that organizations deploy to persuade you and how to effectively resist unwanted influence.
• Acquire a repertoire of tactics you can use to get buy-in for your ideas and projects
• See how influence tactics are used in multiple contexts, including organizational contexts, sales and marketing contexts, and in day-to-day interactions
• Have opportunities to share your experiences through exercises and discussion with your co-participants.

Dr. Brent McFerran is W.J. VanDusen Associate Professor of Marketing at Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business. He received his Ph.D. from University of British Columbia. He was previously on faculty at University of Michigan and UBC-Okanagan. His research examines social influences in consumption, moral psychology, and prosocial behavior. He was previously recognized as an Marketing Science Institute Young Scholar (2017), won the Society for Consumer Psychology’s Early Career Award (2017), and has won awards for his teaching.
Brent’s work has appeared in the leading scholarly journals in both marketing and psychology. Hundreds of major media outlets, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Harvard Business Review, and Globe and Mail, on six continents have featured his work. His work has also been featured in various popular press, including People, Cosmopolitan, Shape, Allure, Good Housekeeping, Reader’s Digest, Wired, Weight Watchers, and Oprah.
