A major retail chain rolled-out a new ERP system for a brand new geographic region. The strategy was to develop brand new data into the new infrastructure rather than converting from the legacy system. The plan went out of control and had major risks especially around integrity of data. The supposed fresh new data had lots of errors, items were tagged with incorrect dimensions, prices, manufacturers, etc. It turns out thousands of records were entered by entry-level employees, working under unrealistic tight deadlines, who had no experience to help recognize incorrect data provided by its large supply chain vendor. Not only did this cause a massive delay, but the project go-live date was missed, it was significantly over-budget, and intensive rework had to be done on the data that was entered.
