As the newly minted chapter chair for our Surrey, Langley, North Delta region, I would like to take the opportunity to express my excitement for the future direction of our board.
The board is working hard to bring you professional development in keeping with our motto “local, professional and affordable”. We continue to seek out interesting, informative and engaging speakers to deliver the PD you want and need. We continue to work with CPABC, their speakers and other non-CPABC sources to bring to our region PD seminars of interest to you. Your suggestions are always welcome either directly to us at an event or through the survey monkey feedback following an event. Please provide as much detail as you can.
Now, “giving back for the future” is something that your chapter board is very excited about and we hope you will be too.
Working with CPABC we have established two scholarships – one at Kwantlen Polytechnic University ($1,300/year for 10 years) and one at Simon Fraser University ($1,500/year for at least four years to a student resident in the SLND area). The funds used to establish these have come from surplus funds that we had earned from PD events. The chapter board was given choices by CPABC to use the funds and the board has decided to fund scholarships that benefit students in our region.
To explain the source of funds, we do our best to set your PD seminar prices at a predictable level, usually in the range of $60-$75 for a 3 hour session for 100-120 attendees. The prices are determined to cover all costs including speakers’ fees, venue costs and other supplies like name tags, etc. Sometimes our speakers may charge a smaller fee or none at all. In the case of no speaker fee we do provide a gift card in appreciation for their time in putting together and putting on the seminar. Where we are able to have larger groups 120+, we will set our registration total at what we believe is an achievable level and price the event accordingly. If the event is sold out we may realize a surplus for that event.
The scholarships are now posted on the CPA Education Foundation blog page. We encourage you to share them with your kids, family, friends, colleagues and your network. You may even want to post a link on your own website if you have one or circulate it to your clients. We believe that this is a good use of these surplus funds and we hope you do too. If future surplus funds are realized we will look at extending the life of these scholarships.
