Our chapter is pleased to be hosting the Employment and Labour Relations Update by Carman J. Overholt, Q.C.. Carman has presented for us on many occasions. He will give us an update on recent legal developments that relate to the workplace and his insights regarding the best practices in managing human resources. He will include a presentation on enforceable written contracts of employment and discuss “Recent Developments in Employment and Human Rights Law”. As in past sessions, we have allowed time for Carman to answer your questions regarding the wide range of “hypothetical” situations we encounter in the workplace. Carman J. Overholt, Q.C. is a senior litigation lawyer having practiced employment, labour relations law and commercial litigation in Vancouver, BC since he was called to the Bar in 1986. The focus of Carman’s practice is advising on employment, labour relations and human rights issues and representing clients in workplace disputes. Carman has appeared before the Supreme Court of BC, the Court of Appeal for BC, the BC Human Rights Tribunal, the Employment Standards Tribunal, the BC Labour Relations Board, the Canadian Industrial Relations Board, the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal and other Tribunals.
Carman has represented employers in numerous labour arbitration proceedings and in collective bargaining. The focus of Carman’s practice is working closely with senior management and human resources professionals to ensure compliance with labour, employment, occupational health and safety and human rights legislations and the development of policies and strategies that minimize the risk of litigation and disruption of operations. He has significant experience in advising employers in various sectors of the economy including financial services, technology, retail, service, hospitality, construction, mining, forestry, manufacturing and transportation.
Carman is a frequent lecturer on a wide range of employment and labour relations subjects for various groups including the BC Human Resources Management Association, the Canadian Institute, Insight, Lancaster House, the Vancouver Board of Trade, the Canadian Bar Association, the Continuing Legal Education Society in British Columbia and the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business.
Carman is the Past President of the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch) and founding Chair and President of Pro Bono Law of BC. Carman is the Past President of the Advocates Club and the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club.
