On July 3, 2019 CPABC, in collaboration with the CPABC Okanagan Chapter, hosted the inaugural Member Showcase event in Kelowna BC at the Manteo Resort located on the scenic shores of Lake Okanagan.
Member Showcase is a new initiative launched this year. This member engagement event highlights various products, services and useful resources that CPABC members can access. And, it also provides an opportunity for recent CPA members (those who have been members for 5 years or less) to learn more about how they can engage with the profession.
Over 55 members attended this event. Many attendees were new CFE grads or recently designated CPAs. Several others were members who volunteer their time as co-chairs of one of the local CPABC practitioner forums (which meets quarterly in Kelowna and Vernon), who serve as CPA Ambassadors with CPABC’s recruitment department, or who are active with the CPA Canada financial literacy or CRA CVITP (tax clinic) volunteer programs.
Maxine DeHart, a Governor of the CPA Education Foundation of B.C. (CPAEF) and elected councillor for the City of Kelowna, welcomed members to her beautiful hometown. Maxine has a long history of service to the profession having served as a public rep for one of the legacy organizations and currently on the CPAEF board.
She was followed by Martha Thomas CPA CA, a member of the provincial CPABC board of directors, who introduced other members of the board in attendance including Sheila Nelson CPA CA (provincial treasurer and liaison to the local chapter), Karen Horcher FCPA FCGA (second vice-chair), Chris Burnley FCPA FCA, Chris Gimpel CPA CA, and newly elected or appointed board members Alain LeFebvre FCPA FCA, Josie Lim CPA CA, Stuart Newton CPA CA, Peter Tingling CPA CGA and Bereket Kebede (public representative newly appointed by the Minister). The provincial board was in Kelowna for their annual strategic planning meeting.
Keynote remarks were made by Leigh Sindlinger CPA CGA who has been a financial literacy volunteer for several years. Leigh was recognized for her volunteerism with the 2018 Distinguished Service Award. She spoke about her volunteer journey and the tremendous reward in helping young people in the community become more financially literate.
Special guests included Barry Macdonald FCPA FCA, past CPABC board chair who was thanked for his tremendous service to the profession; Li Zhang, CPA Canada’s financial literacy program director; and Kyla Stewart CPA, CPABC Okanagan Chapter chair.
Attendees were encouraged to visit all five tables around the room to find out more about CPABC. There was a table for Member Services, Student Recruitment and CPA Ambassadors, Professional Development, Chapter and CPA Canada.
Staff at these tables included David Chiang CPA CA, vice-president member advice and programs – who also acted as emcee for the evening, Lorena Christensen CPA CMA, director of recruitment; Jennifer Jones CPA CA, associate director professional development; Tierra Pawluk, senior member services coordinator and organizer for this event; and Li Zhang from CPA Canada.
Members received a raffle ticket for attending and extra raffle tickets for visiting each table increasing their chances to win several amazing door prizes.
To get involved with CPABC, visit the volunteer resource centre which contains information about volunteerism. There’s also a link on the website to complete an online volunteer form. Members are encouraged to find an activity they have an interest in supporting and to contribute to their profession or community.
