Update: 2016 Chapter Leaders Meeting


CPABC hosted its annual 2016 Chapter Leaders Meeting in Vancouver on June 2 and 3.  Thirty chapter chairs, vice-chairs, and PD chairs from 15 chapters were in attendance including Kootenay East Chapter board member Al Paetz.   The meeting was an opportunity for leaders to connect with other leaders and various provincial staff including Jan Sampson FCPA FCA, David Chiang CPA CA, Tierra Pawluk and several others who would also be presenting the following day.

An opening dinner was held on June 2 at the Vancouver Club.  Dave Hallinan, FCPA FCMA, vice-chair of the provincial CPABC board, gave the opening address.  He thanked chapter leaders for their valued contribution and spoke about how chapters fulfill a vital link between local members and the profession by providing opportunities for professional and personal development, social networking, recruitment and student support.

The evening was capped with a cake cutting to celebrate CPABC’s first anniversary on June 24.

The working session was on June 3 and held at the CPABC office. David Chiang CPA CA served as the moderator of the event and recapped the progress made from the previous year’s brainstorming session.  Nicola McLaren CPA CA, CPABC’s new director of PD, led the first session on how CPABC can support chapters deliver local PD.  Many ideas were generated and there was a good exchange among all participants.

The second session was an update on the CPA Student life cycle.  Diane Chung CPA CMA, CPABC ‘s vice-president of business development and marketing and her team of recruiters explained how CPABC recruits at local colleges and universities.  Participation by local members is always welcomed.  To express your interest, go to the “Get Involved” page of the chapter blog and click on the link for recruitment volunteering.  This session also covered preparatory courses and the new Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance.

The next update was provided by Sukaina Rashid CPA CA from the CPA Western School of Business.  She provided an in depth review of the CPA program and how the school delivers the professional certification program to BC CPA students.

Rashid was followed by Lily Dayson from the Education department covering the CPA Mentoring program, professional experience requirements, and student supports.

During lunch, Richard Rees FCPA FCA, CEO of CPABC, provided leaders with a provincial update.  He added that he is looking forward to meeting the leaders again during the provincial member engagement tour (MET) later in the Fall.

The afternoon was filled with quick updates by staff and a session on how to run effective board meetings led by Scott Powell of MDA Consulting.  His practical tips and mock board meeting was educational and fun.

On behalf of CPABC, David Chiang concluded the meeting by thanking leaders for attending. The CPABC team is looking forward to seeing everyone again during the MET.
