The evening started with a networking event that allowed over 100 invited attendees to get to know each other.
Opening remarks were provided by Leanne Poon, Executive Director at the Douglas College Foundation. She introduced Lorena Christensen, CPA CMA, CPABC’s Director of Student Recruitment and Employer Relations who welcomed attendees to this CPABC sponsored event. She was followed by Han Shu CPA CA, chair of the CPABC Burnaby / New Westminster Chapter who announced a new multi-year scholarship for Douglas College students with a concentration in data analytics. This award is matched by the CPA Education Foundation and the first award is expected in the fall 2019.
Han was followed by Arsineh Garabedian CPA CA, former chair of the accounting division at Douglas College who provided an overview of the new data analytics concentration. This is a unique program that addresses competencies expected of new professional accountants.
The panel included industry leaders Gerry Akkerman from Translink, Dr. Michael Favere-Marchesi, Associate Professor of accounting and auditing at SFU|Beedie, Nicholas Mobilio CPA CA from PwC, and Douglas College faculty member Cathy Zhang CPA CGA, moderated by Scott MacEachern CPA CA an adjunct professor from SFU.
