Event Recap: Whitecaps Tie Sounders

The CPABC Burnaby/New Westminster Chapter, in collaboration with CPABC, co-hosted the August 23 2017  Whitecaps FC games night.  Over 100 members, students, candidates and their guests came out to cheer on the home team against the Seattle Sounders FC.

A well attended pre-game reception was held at the stately Georgian Court Hotel directly across from BC Place Stadium which provided attendees the opportunity to network with other soccer fans.  Opening remarks were provided by Han Shu CPA CA, chair of the CPABC Burnaby/New Westminster Chapter.

Greg Anderson, Whitecaps’ vice-president of soccer operations, was the evening’s guest presenter. Anderson oversees the club’s soccer operations, residency program, player management, professional and amateur scouting, and supports the technical staff with player acquisition.   He shared with the assembled audience of soccer enthusiasts information about the Whitecaps organization, complexities of negotiating player contracts and hints on what to watch for during the game.

Anderson and Seth Gordon, Whitecaps’ Senior Account Executive, both assisted with the drawing of several door prizes, donated by the Whitecaps, which included a team signed jersey, a pair of complimentary tickets to an upcoming home game and various sports attire.

Attendees then headed across the street to BC Place Stadium to watch the game.  The Sounders took an early lead scoring the only goal in the first half.  The Whitecaps evened the match with a second half goal by Fredy Montero – scoring against his former team.  Several close kicks by both teams kept the tension ultra high through to the end of the game which was extended by three minutes.  Both goalies successfully kept their nets empty ending this home game tied at 1-1.

The next professional sports night will be the CPABC BC Lions game night on September 22.  The home team will be taking on the Hamilton Tigercats.  Attendees are invited to a pre-game networking event and to watch the game at the exclusive Club Orange | Edgewater Lounge in BC Place Stadium overlooking the field.  The event is family friendly.  Tickets are on sale and quantities are limited so register now.
